Nikon's 80-400 millimeter high-power zoom lens features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld super-telephoto shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit rooms. The VR operation works with Nikon F4, F100, N80, N65, and D1 cameras.
Two VR modes are available:
- VR for both the viewfinder image and the image plane: Moderate VR operation is activated, ensuring viewing comfort for the viewfinder image.
- VR for the image plane only: Reduces the possibility of viewfinder-induced eyestrain and conserves battery power.
Other features include:
- Use of VR function is equivalent to using a shutter speed three f-stops faster.
- VR is automatically detected during panning operation.
- New optical design using 3 ED glass elements and a 9-bladed diaphragm for high resolution and high contrast, even at maximum apertures.
- Built-in A/M switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus.
- Filter does not rotate during zooming.

Fotomotive optisch nah heran, doch gerade
bei langbrennweitigen Objektiven und
Aufnahmen aus der Hand muss dieser Vorteil
mit dem Risiko der Verwacklung bezahlt
werden: Schon geringfügige, vom Fotografen
nicht bemerkte Bewegungen können zu einem
deutlichen Schärfeverlust führen. Nun stellt
Nikon sein erstes Super-Tele mit einem
System zur wirksamen Verwacklungsreduzierung
vor. Das 5x-Hochleistungs-Zoomobjektiv ist
mit einer innovativen, ähnlichen Systemen
überlegenen Technik zur
Verwacklungreduzierung ausgestattet. Das
heißt, dass Aufnahmen, die bisher nur mit
Stativ möglich waren, durch die neue Technik
jetzt auch aus freier Hand scharf werden.
Diese Technik ist so effizient, dass selbst
bei Handaufnahmen mit einer Brennweite von
400 mm die Verwacklungsgefahr massiv
vermindert wird. Wird die Kamera bewegt, so
schaltet sich das VR-System automatisch zu.
Durch die Verwendung von ED-Glas bei drei
Linsenelementen ist eine sehr gute
Abbildungsleistung bereits bei Ausnutzung
der Anfangsöffnung sichergestellt. Natur-
und Tierfotografen begrüßen ein solches
Zoom, das nicht nur leicht, sondern auch
relativ klein ist. Ein ideales Super-Tele
aber auch für Schnappschüsse, Porträts,
Sportaufnahmen und zur Lösung vieler anderer
fotografischer Aufgaben
